My Neighborhood - Brooklyn, New York

Dyker Heights

Said to be named for dikes built by the Dutch that aided in the draining and reclaiming of the marshland, this area lies sandwiched between Fort Hamilton and Bensonhurst. It was primarily a rural area until the early 20th century when developers built one and two family houses. Mansions built along 11 Avenue (some of which still stand today) provided splendid views of the Narrows.

Claims to Fame:
  • Dyker Park (running along 14 Avenue, from Cropsey Ave to 86 Street ) offers athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts and a spacious children's playground.
  • Dyker Beach Golf Course, (7 Avenue & 86 Street) city owned, but privately run, is a haven for city dwelling golf enthusiasts.
  • The area attracts crowds of pedestrians and hordes of traffic at Christmas time where the holiday displays are more than elaborate. Mile high toy soldiers stand at attention and the ghosts of Dicken's Christmas Carol come to life. Much of the area is aglow in vibrant reds and greens. It is truly a sight to be seen.
