| Old Mill Basin (Flatlands) |
|
| Another of the original
Dutch towns, established in 1693 as Nieuw Amersfort. Its name was derived
from the flat terrain. It included areas now known as Canarsie, Bergen
Beach, Mill Basin and Marine Park. It was founded in 1647 and remained
farmland until 1875 when horse-car service began along Flatbush Ave,
connecting the area to Downtown Brooklyn. Development in this area was
somewhat slow as it was not serviced by the railroad. The advent of
the automobile resulted in increased development.
Claims to Fame:
- Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church (3931 Kings Highway) was built in
1663 by order of Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant. Many early Dutch
families are buried in the cemetery next to the church.
- A typical example of Long Island Dutch colonial style can be seen
in the Stoothoff-Baxter-Kouwenhoven House (1640 East 48 St) partially
constructed in 1747 and completed in 1811.
